Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit in his prime, is no friend of excitement. If he had known what the wizard Gandalf was up to during his surprise visit, who knows - perhaps he would have slammed the door of his tranquil cave in his face. Then he would not have been sent on a restless journey through danger and darkness as a master thief against his will, with giant trolls, orcs and spiders waiting for him. He would not have met the pale Gollum or the dragon Smaug. However, he would also not have found out how much daring there really was in him, what it was like to become someone else, highly esteemed by dwarves, elves and humans, a trusted friend of a wizard.

The giant Gandalf picks up the tiny hobbit Bilbo Baggins in his cozy cave so that he can go on an adventure.
