Historical experience and current challenge

Police historian Dr. Dirk Götting from the Police Academy of Lower Saxony is the curator of the exhibition "Friends, Helpers, Street Fighters - The Police in the Weimar Republic", which is on display at the Historical Museum in Bremerhaven until 1 February 2026. In his lecture on January 15, 2026 at 6 p.m. at the Historisches Museum Bremerhaven, Götting will address a central theme of the exhibition, the loss of democracy as a historical experience. However, he will also ask what relevance this historical knowledge has for the police and society today? Are there signs of a similar development with regard to the police, and if so, what can the police do today to behave more democratically than in the early 1930s?
