The Norwegian painter and graphic artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944) is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Tanja Langer delves deep into the psyche of the painter, who decided at the age of 17 to dedicate his life to art. In her literary approach, the author reveals his struggles, fears and passions.

In poetic language, she provides a fascinating and knowledgeable insight into the world of the artist, who plumbed the most subtle processes of the soul and at the same time invented radical forms. Even though he showed a certain affinity to Expressionism, he always took an individual position in painting, similar to Gauguin and van Gogh, to whom he felt close. Edvard Munch drew his themes from life: Death, fear, love and jealousy preoccupied him until his death at the age of eighty.

Edvard Munch's tragic love for Tulla Larsen, his stay in the mental hospital in Copenhagen, the importance of his models and photography for his painting all find a place in this novel, which also makes Munch's obsession with memory comprehensible.

Tanja Langer discovered her love of Edvard Munch during a stay at the Rasmus Meyer Collection in Bergen (Norway) in 2001. Edvard Munch first appeared as a subject in her 2006 novel Little Story of the Woman Who Could Not Be Faithful.

Tanja Langer has staged numerous plays and published short stories,
radio plays and novels. In 2019, she launched her project on remembering and forgetting with the novel Meine kleine Großmutter & Mr. Thursday oder die Erfindung der Erinnerung. As a librettist for new music, she has written libretti for the operas Kleist and Ovartaci - crazy, queer & loveable for 12 composers (Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin). In 2016 she founded the multilingual Bübül-Verlag Berlin. She is a member of the P.E.N.
