Independent, relentless and unpopular - that's the self-proclaimed outsider Alceste. Repulsed by the hypocrisy of those around him, he plans to turn his back on society. There is only one thing holding him back: he loves the life-hungry Célimène - and wants to persuade her to move into solitude with him. But the young widow is anything but a born dropout. She surrounds herself with numerous admirers and knows how to play by the rules of society. At the same time, she doesn't take honesty too seriously. The truth fanatic Alceste, on the other hand, gets into one conflict after another. His unsparing openness lands him in court when he bluntly tells the untalented but influential poet Oronte what he thinks of his work. None of this matters to the idealist, however, as long as he can save his beloved Célimène from the morally decaying structures. Will he be able to win her over for himself and a life of social isolation? How much sincerity is good for living together?

Molière's plays are brilliant character studies, timeless in their linguistic sophistication and sharp eye for human weaknesses. With "The Misanthrope", one of Molière's most popular plays, the Hans Otto Theater is once again making a guest appearance in the magnificent ambience of the Schlosstheater.
