On a snowy Christmas Eve, a little boy lies in his bed, agitated and wide awake. He doesn't move, hardly dares to breathe. He is afraid that he might miss the last sound he has often missed - the ringing of the bells on Santa's sleigh. It is five minutes before midnight when the boy is startled by a thunderous roar. He rubs the steamed-up panes on his window and can't believe his eyes: a shiny black train stops in front of his house, the steam from the huge locomotive hisses through the gently falling snowflakes into the night sky. The boy runs outside in his pyjamas and slippers, where he is greeted by the train conductor, who has obviously been waiting for him. And so begins a mysterious journey for the boy towards the North Pole.

The Polar Express was nominated for three Oscars in the categories Best Song, Best Sound and Best Sound Editing. The song Believe was also nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Song category. Tom Hanks won a Bambi in the Film International category.
