The Emperor's New Clothes

Christmas tale with music for audiences aged 5 and up, freely adapted from Hans Christian Andersen

The emperor lives in luxury. More important to him than his affairs of state, however, are the latest and most dazzling garments: silk, velvet and powdered wigs instead of audiences, laws and boring meetings. Just as it is usually said of kings that "His Majesty is in the Council of State", here it is said that "the Emperor is in the dressing room".
One day, the emperor receives a tempting offer from two travelers: they are able to weave the most beautiful fabric imaginable. What's more, the fabric had the wonderful property of remaining invisible to people who were unfit for their profession or were illegally stupid.
The emperor is delighted: "If I had such suits, I could easily find out who in my kingdom is fit for office or not, and I could then distinguish the stupid from the clever." He has no idea that he is falling for two swindlers.

The bremer shakespeare company's production tells the story of the pompous life at the court of a ruler and how vanity and the power of illusion cause people to switch off their reason and fall prey to their own stupidity.
The actors playfully and musically involve the children in the course of the story, making the theater performance an active, communal experience.
