Mira Landwehr on one of the last taboos in the meat industry: the blood factory. Shiny silver, incognito: around 120 tanker trucks filled to the brim with fresh animal blood drive along German roads every day. To where? And why? What is actually done with the animal blood that results from the slaughter of so-called farm animals? Why is the blue blood of endangered primeval horseshoe crabs so sought after? And who profits from the hemoglobin and plasma powder business? No matter how you eat - vegan, vegetarian or meat-based: the answers concern everyone and expose what happens in blood factories and in which products - often unknown - blood seeps back into the consumer chain.
