THE THINGS OF LIFE
(LES CHOSES DE LA VIE)
Director: Claude Sautet
France 1970, 82 min, OV French with German subtitles, Blu-ray projection
With: Michel Piccoli, Romy Schneider, Léa Massari, Gérard Lartigau
This drama marks the beginning of a long, intensive, successful collaboration between director Claude Sautet as a teacher and Romy Schneider as an erudite pupil, who established her true world fame after the unspeakable Sissi films.
Joy and suffering, which lend importance to an existence and make life worth living:
Sautet's masterpiece revolves around the life of architect Pierre (Michel Piccoli), who gets into a terrible car accident. Severely injured, he sees his life flash before his eyes. Long at a crossroads in his life, torn between the new life at the side of his lover (Romy Schneider) and the familiar one with his wife, it is now perhaps too late for him to make a decision.
Excitingly experimental in its cinematic narrative style - the title sequence alone! - Sautet elegantly switches between time and reality, while his leading actors give exceptional performances (and break records with their cigarette consumption). And Philippe Sarde conjures up a soundtrack that is one of the most beautiful in cinema.
