The Five Lives of Irmgard Keun - by Lutz Hübner and Sarah Nemitz - world premiere on January 14, 2023 - Schauspielhaus, Großes Haus - Schauspiel

Irmgard Keun was one of the most important and successful writers of the Weimar Republic. However, as early as 1933 her books were banned by the National Socialists. Keun went into exile and continued to publish there. After her return to Germany, she was unable to continue her early successes. It was not until the 1970s that she was rediscovered.

The latest play by Lutz Hübner and Sarah Nemitz is set in 1977 in a WDR television studio. An imaginary documentary about Irmgard Keun is to be produced. Everyone is ready for the next scene. Suddenly, the author herself enters the set! With her quick wit and boldness, she upsets the shoot. A game on the edge between reality and fiction unfolds, a life with many stations. And at night, in the empty studio, the ghosts of the past return.

Director Mina Salehpour and her team make this world premiere a special theater experience. The audience takes a seat on stage and gets a glimpse into the machinery of theater and into the world of Irmgard Keun. Lutz Hübner and Sarah Nemitz have been among the most successful playwrights in the German-speaking world for more than 20 years. Their plays, which have won many awards, are often comedic, at the same time abysmal and always socially engaged. In Düsseldorf, among others, "Willkommen أهلا وسهلا " and "Paradies" were seen.
