Comic-fantastic opera in three acts by Otto Nicolai. Libretto by Salomon Hermann Mosenthal after William Shakespeare's comedy 'The Merry Wives of Windsor'. In German with German and English surtitles.
"One may lie for the sake of pleasure, if one's heart remains full of love and loyalty."
The impoverished old drunkard Sir Falstaff shamelessly hits on two neighbors because he is after their husbands' money. They refuse to let him get away with it and at the same time teach their husbands a lesson for their eternal jealousy. They hatch an ingenious plan that ends in a turbulent and magical disguise spectacle.
Shakespeare celebrated the joy of life in his FUNNY WIVERS - and Nicolai set it to music with verve. At a time when the female sex had few rights, two women not only triumph over men, but also demonstrate the excesses of "better" society: Everything is upside down here!
