The Mendelssohn Festival is an integral part of Leipzig's musical landscape, giving the international brand "City of Music :Leipzig" an unmistakably diverse and lively face with the cultivation and performance of Mendelssohn's works. In close cooperation, the Mendelssohn-Haus Leipzig and the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig organize an exquisite festival programme every year around the anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's death on 4 November: symphony concerts, chamber music and discussion formats reflect the impressive diversity of Mendelssohn's oeuvre and commemorate the composer, who is inextricably linked to Leipzig's musical tradition. As Gewandhaus conductor and founder of the first German music conservatory, Mendelssohn not only shaped the musical culture of the city of Leipzig, but also the sound tradition of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. His musical works have been an integral part of the orchestra's repertoire ever since.
