In the villa of the private sanatorium "Les Cerisiers", a mental asylum, a murder has occurred for the second time in three months. One of the three inmates - all physicists - has strangled a nurse. Police officers are in the institute's lounge securing evidence. The body is still lying on the parquet floor, and the signs of a struggle are abundantly clear: jumbled furniture, overturned armchairs, a table lying on the floor and an overturned floor lamp. The two crimes are all the more disturbing because the three scientists actually seem harmless and are easy to deal with...

The comedy "The Physicists" by Swiss writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt was written in 1961, against the backdrop of the Cold War and the building of the Berlin Wall. One year later, in the year of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the play was performed for the first time in Zurich. The action takes place in a psychiatric clinic in the present day. The actions and dialogues of the three physicists (Möbius, Newton, Einstein) and their doctor Mathilde von Zahnd that take place there symbolize the tense international situation at the beginning of the 1960s and the influence of science on global conflicts. The central question is the role and responsibility of science for the continued existence of human civilization.

Die Physiker is the first premiere of the newly founded, professional ensemble of Szene 10.
