Prince Tamino is commissioned by the Queen of the Night to free her daughter from the clutches of the evil Sarastro. The strange bird-catcher Papageno is to help him. But as soon as they reach Sarastro, he turns out to be a shining light and the queen a vengeful fury. Or are they? Are good and evil so easy to separate? What powers are actually at work here? On his way to Pamina, Tamino gets to know himself and the world anew.
Mozart's enigmatic opera about love, purification and humanity has enchanted children and adults since 1791. State director Josef E. Köpplinger stages this magical work as a story about the secret of transformation and growing up - but above all as a declaration of love to the world of fantasy.
