Divas have what we cannot explain, namely - charisma.
Unique in voice, posture and expression, they inevitably attract us.
Divas not only embody glamour, but also intertwine their 'artistic body' with existential pain, thus bringing the real person into play in all their fragility. As viewers, we enjoy the mythical story of rise, glory and fall in the spirit of classical tragedy. We admire and empathize with her and if she dies before her time, it is as if she spares us the thought of what she would have looked like in old age. This often results in an image of impossibility, because the diva we carry within us must not age. Although a diva can assume a divine status, the message she conveys to us ultimately boils down to the fact that nothing is permanent - neither for her nor for us. Oscillating between heaven and hell, she shows us that vulnerability and a fragile ground beneath our feet are not only her normality, but also ours.

DIVA ASSOLUTA MARIA CALLAS

The exhibition "DIVA ASSOLUTA MARIA CALLAS" traces the uniqueness and self-image of Maria Callas as well as her artistic practice, the roles assigned to her and the attitude she celebrated from an artistic perspective. Stages from her eventful biography and the thematic categories of rise, splendor and fall are selected to structure the exhibition. In the role of the mythical ideal, Maria Callas anticipated the narcissism of our digital modern age, in which anyone can be a diva. Today, social media provide individuals with a welcome stage in their quest for social attention. Strategies of media representation are also reflected in the context of celebrity culture. Outstanding works by artists from the Künstlerhausvereinigung Wien and other guests also trace the iconic images of the diva Callas, which are as relevant today as they were then.
The stages of the Pasinger Fabrik once again place the theme of "Diva" in context. In films, readings, panel discussions and concerts, we celebrate the wondrous nature of the diva. We also ask ourselves what it would be like to be a diva ourselves. Beautiful, desirable or unapproachable - just as our audience likes it! Viva la Diva!
