When gangsters need someone to get them safely out of the danger zone after a coup, they turn to the Driver (Ryan O'Neal). He is the best getaway driver in all of Los Angeles and is known for asking no questions.

But an almost delusionally ambitious police inspector (Bruce Dern) has long been hot on his heels. When he learns of a new assignment, he lies in wait. The driver only escapes with the help of Player (Isabelle Adjani), who provides him with an alibi. Angered, the cop seeks revenge: he stages a robbery and hires the driver for the job...
