E.1027 - Eileen Gray and the house by the sea

She built a house for herself. Unfortunately, it became a masterpiece.

The Irish designer Eileen Gray built a retreat on the Côte d'Azur in 1929. Her first house is a discreet, avant-garde masterpiece. She called it E.1027, a cryptic combination of her initials and those of Jean Badovici, with whom she built it. When Le Corbusier discovered the house, he was fascinated and obsessed. He later covered the walls with murals and published photos of them. Gray described these paintings as vandalism and demanded that they be taken down. He ignores their wishes and instead builds his famous Le Cabanon directly behind E.1027, which still dominates the narrative of the place today. A story about the power of female expression and the desire of men to control it.
