All is still well with the world in Friedland. Or at least all is well again, because the past was a long time ago - at least that's what some people in the village think. But the moor never forgets. Not only are there mysterious ruins, sometimes it also spits out corpses and it is with one such bog body that the story (almost) begins. Detective Inspector Saskia Harder is sent from the big city to Friedland. A good start after a grueling assignment as a police instructor in Afghanistan. The somewhat clumsy but all the more hard-working village policeman Alfons Tenhagen is sent to support her investigations. And then there is the enigmatic moor mistress Edith Telaar, who seems to know more than she is letting on.
Many of the set pieces in Mareike Wegener's debut film seem familiar at first, but its original musical score and stylistically confident visual language set it apart from other provincial crime thrillers. Comparisons to Wes Anderson send their regards. Enriched with dry humor and surprising decisions, the crime thriller definitely provides food for thought. "Why not", says the DLF film critic.
