So quickly are bright things in confusion.

The wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta is just around the corner. But first Theseus has to help his best friend Egeus. His daughter Hermia has fallen in love with the wrong partner, Lysander. In order to change Hermia's mind, an effective threat is set up. The lovers have only one choice: to flee into the darkness of a dreamy June night. Hot on their heels are their friends Helena and Demetrius. In the pale glow of the wild setting, reality and reason lose their normative contours. Sexual desire and animal lust rise up and take over. Who gets it on with whom, when, where and how is not determined by chance, but by fate - and Puck. With his love juice, the devilish troll gives desire a boost and pulls the rug out from under the feet of everyone he can influence.

Love, trolls, lust and sex dominate the night, during which a few craftsmen rehearse their amateurish performance of "Pyramus and Thisbe". The tragedy of missed happiness and unfulfilled longing becomes slapstick precisely because of the absolute naivety with which the craftsmen play here.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" is not only William Shakespeare's best-known comedy, but also perhaps his most abysmal. Worlds collide here that can only be reconciled through intoxication.

Stephan Kimmig stages the creatures from Shakespeare's famous fairy world as real-life eccentrics who create a parallel world on the fringes of society. Weird, unconventional and dazzling, they radically question what is considered normal.
