Takemitsu Tōru (1930-1996) was one of Japan's most important new composers. Growing up in a time of upheaval, between strong traditions and new stimuli from the USA and Europe, he trained as a self-taught Western-style composer. He became famous as an ambassador of the Japanese world of sound and music with his November steps for biwa, shakuhachi and orchestra (1967), and his multifaceted oeuvre also reflects the most diverse forms of engagement with late European Romanticism, Impressionism and avant-garde through to pop music. Highly sensitive to natural phenomena and an alert observer of the cities and civilization of his homeland, his visual and musical-imaginative talent also found a lifelong sphere of work in film music in particular. He has left his mark on numerous classics of Japanese cinema.

An international team of authors has now dedicated a comprehensive publication to Takemitsu, which places his work and life in the context of "globalized composing". The most comprehensive catalog of works to date presents all facets of his oeuvre. A selection of Takemitsu's texts, with which he accompanied his composing throughout his life, offers a deep insight into his aesthetic thinking.

Rüdiger Albrecht and Rainer Schmusch, two authors of the volume, will introduce Takemitsu Tōru. The renowned narrator Lars Schmidtke has been engaged for the readings. Maria Zwerschke (flute), Hanna-Maria Tikka (violin) and Ahhyun Lee (piano) will perform live compositions.
