Rita is overqualified but underrepresented in her company in Mexico City. One day, a powerful cartel boss called Manita approaches her with a job that at first sounds unbelievable. Manita wants to get out of crime and finally live as a woman. So, with Rita's help, the "distant cousin" Emilia Pérez unexpectedly appears in urban society and in the life of "Manita's" unsuspecting wife and supposed widow Jessi. But like her life, Emilia's past only obeys its own rules and is not so easy to shake off.
EMILIA PÉREZ is a film that would have fitted in well with our "Wow, these movies really exist!" series. An exuberant thriller in bright colors that mixes complex themes from trans identity to organized crime, made by a 70+ year old white Frenchman and impressive actresses who play, sing and dance their way through the scenes. The film is also a musical, but one that does not follow any musical logic. It is certainly a polarizing work in which there is much to discover. First and foremost the magnificent Karla Sofía Gascón as Emilia Pérez, who is the first trans actress to be considered for major international film awards for the film.
