Tatyana lives in the country and only knows the big world from books. Until the world appears on her family's country estate in the person of the blasé Eugene Onegin and turns Tatyana's head. This Onegin leaves a trail of devastation in his wake, breaking Tatyana's heart and piercing that of his friend Lensky with a bullet in a duel. From then on, Onegin, the "superfluous man", is on the run from himself. Many years later, he tries once again to forge a bond with Tatyana, who has since become a great lady. But when he sees himself through her eyes, he becomes even more painfully aware of the emptiness of his life.
