September 11, 2001: The terrorist attack on the World Trade Center turns Oskar's life upside down. When he comes home from school, he is alone - only the answering machine is blinking: It is the last messages from his father, whom he will never see again. When he later finds an envelope with a key in it by chance, he regains his courage. It must be a sign from his father, a secret invitation - just like they used to play together: an expedition! Oskar tries to find out what the key is all about. His adventurous journey takes him right across New York City and the great loneliness that torments Oskar grows smaller by the day.

Jonathan Safran Foer's novel recalls a striking point in world history. Through the eyes of a young boy, he looks society in the face and traces its hurts, longings and pains. A touching journey that questions what relationships mean and what we remember when we lose everything.
