Gender-based violence against women* is an alarming factor in armed conflicts - from sexual violence to rape and genocide. It is also caused in times of peace and does not stop when the wars end. Because it is passed on - often unconsciously - to future generations.
In the next issue of Feel the Weibz*, Deniz Greschner talks to guests Ferda Berse, Selma Jahić and Lamya Kaddor on this year's Human Rights Day about gender-based war violence: its continuities, causes and consequences as well as the need for action.
Lamya Kaddor is an Islamic studies and education scholar, Islamic religious educator and publicist. She has been a member of the Bundestag for the Duisburg-Süd constituency since 2021. Kaddor is the spokesperson for domestic policy for the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary group, a member of the Committee on Internal Affairs and a deputy member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (Middle East reporting).
She is also considered one of the ten most influential Muslim women in Europe.
Selma Jahić is a contemporary witness and genocide survivor from Srebrenica as well as an activist. For several years now, she has been working intensively on the culture of remembrance of the genocide against Bosniaks, as this topic receives little attention in German-speaking countries. She tries to reach young people in particular and educate them about what happened in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Europe, after the Second World War in the 1990s.
Ferda Berse is a social scientist and works as a trade union secretary. She specializes in critical sociology, gender studies and ethnicity studies. She is involved in various organizations both theoretically and practically on the topics of Islamism, Kurdistan and the Yezidi diaspora in Germany.
Following the talk, there will be an opportunity to view some works by the artist Admir Delić on this topic with a focus on the genocide in Srebrenica. The exhibition will be on display at Keuning.haus until the end of the year.
