Felix Ambach Quintett feat. Emmanuel Michael

"Young scene jazz series"

Roger Kintopf, Julius Gawlik and Felix Ambach had known each other for over ten years and had already played together in various bands when they formed their trio in 2020. The trio is the winner of the 2021 Young German Jazz Award, the 2021 jazz@undesigned selection grant from the Werner Richard Dörken Foundation and the 2022 Hi-Five Jazz Award, among others. British vibraphonist Jonny Mansfield joined the formation in 2023 to form the quartet. The mutual trust and friendship between the musicians is the basis for being honest and vulnerable in the moment of playing.

Ambach's compositions, written explicitly for his fellow musicians, define the framework within which this interplay takes place. The majority of the music is improvised. All four musicians can influence the direction of the music equally at any time. The unusual line-up of clarinet, vibraphone, double bass and drums results in a very unique and characteristic band sound(audio samples here).

On the current tour, the highly acclaimed American guitarist Emmanuel Michael is expanding the quartet into a quintet. He recently toured with Ambrose Akinmusire and Aaron Parks and performed with the bands of Marcus Gilmore and Dayna Stephens at the Village Vanguard in New York City.
