Photographs by Martin Gerner
The author and photographer Martin Gerner has portrayed Afghanistan, its inhabitants and their everyday lives for twenty years with great expertise and photographic mastery.
Authentic and close to the people, his pictures document the period between the intervention in the Hindu Kush at the end of 2001 and immediately before the return of the Taliban and the withdrawal of the West. His pictures are able to fill visual and emotional knowledge gaps and make an important contribution to the work of remembering a culturally rich society that is often connoted as backward in our discourse. Unusual perspectives meet human resilience and vision.
Finding Afghanistan conveys a diverse and self-confident face of the people in the Hindu Kush and thus opens up new opportunities for dialog and intercultural encounters in Germany.
The exhibition follows on from the presentation of the photo book of the same name at the Catholic Academy in November 2023.
