The Swiss artist Franz Gertsch (1930-2022) is considered a pioneer of photorealism and a master of the modern woodcut. In the second half of the 20th century, he coined a new concept of realism in painting and achieved worldwide fame with his paintings and woodcuts.
From December 13, 2024 to May 4, 2025, the retrospective exhibition at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg will show an overview of the artist's work from more than 60 years of artistic creation: oversized paintings of the youth and music scene from the 1970s, up to 6 meters in size, iconic portraits of women from the 1980s, family pictures and portraits of his artist friends, epic landscapes and nature shots from the last two decades as well as monumental woodcuts.
