What does it do to a young person when everything they believed in ceases to apply from one day to the next? Albania 1990: the last communist, Stalinist dictatorship in Europe, with an economy of scarcity and secret police. For eleven-year-old Lea Ypi, it was her home, a place of security and freedom. Everything changes when the Wall falls in Berlin and the statue of Enver Hoxha topples from its pedestal in Tirana. Lea has to realize that her family was against the regime and kept a lot of things from her. Now her mother is involved in politics and her father has to fire people as port director. The country descends into chaos, Italy turns away ships full of refugees and Lea begins to wonder what freedom actually is. Based on her own childhood experiences, Lea Ypi sensitively describes what it is like when people are caught up in the storm of history and have to find their bearings anew.
