Max, a good and capable young hunter, loves Agathe, the daughter of the hereditary forester Cuno. In order to become Agathe's husband and to succeed Cuno as hereditary forester, Max must undergo the archaic custom of the test shot. With a successful shot, he must prove himself worthy of the title of hereditary forester in front of the prince. But Max is having no luck with the hunt, his rifle seems to be jinxed. Driven by the pressure to succeed, Max allows himself to be persuaded by the promises of the dark hunting companion Caspar to cast accurate free bullets in the Wolf Gorge and the dance with evil takes its course ...
Andorran director Joan Anton Rechi approaches this repertoire classic of German Romanticism in his very own way in the adaptation by librettist Susanne Wolf and composer Elena Kats-Chernin. He is interested in the dynamics of very closed societies and the question: How much evil lies dormant in all of us?
