FUTUR3 20 JAHRE – DAS SCHAUFENSTER

In the organizer's words:

FUTUR3 20 YEARS - THE SHOWCASE

The event will take place in the new foyer and the new offices.

War, globalization and totalitarianism, but also images of men, dreams and computer games - in the 20 years of its existence, the Cologne collective Futur3 has researched many of the major issues of our time and developed its theater projects from them. To celebrate our anniversary, we invite you to our showcase - three projects, five days, lots to discover:

In the PORTABLE ARCHIVE you can rediscover the testimonies of early Nazis, but also how they found their way into Futur3's theater work in 1934 - Voices: On an open evening with discussion and a look back into the archive of an independent theater production, or Tuesday to Saturday in small groups to play out the content yourself.

With EXPLOITED ISLAND, we celebrate the opening of a digital comic about the South Sea island of Nauru and how it became "Shit Island" at Futur3 (insights into the Futur3 microcosm!).

Finally, we take you into the ongoing play development of MAKING THE STORY, on an evening with a reading, exchange and live link-up to Ukraine!

PORTABLE ARCHIVE

A project by Futur3 and AM Fohr

What can an archive of theater look like if you don't just want to keep a shoebox full of old program booklets - but really want to bring the essence of a play to life? Together with the Franco-German artist AM Fohr, we have archived our project 1934 - Voices and made it "playable". 1943 Voices premiered at the NS Documentation Center in Cologne in 2020 and is a comprehensive, multimedia collage of the testimonies of early Nazis: "Why I became a Nazi!".

On 26.11. we will present the Portable Archive, its genesis, our detours and the predecessor models at an open evening together with AM Fohr!

From November 26 - 30, you can also play Portable Archive yourself in small groups of up to four people. There are no actors, as an "archive group" you sit down at the table with game instructions, numerous archive materials, media messages and everything you need to discover "1934 - Voices" in a playful way.

You can book one of the time slots, approx. 90 minutes, together as an existing group (2-4 people) or register on your own - a new "archive group" will then be put together from the individual registrations, depending on the date preferences.

Newly discovered or rediscovered: What remains of this play, off the stage?

EXPLOITED ISLAND - a digital webcomic

EXPLOITED ISLAND - is the digital webcomic for our successful production SHIT ISLAND! Futur3 co-founder André Erlen has created an opulent, interactive comic about our project SHIT ISLAND (2018) and its creation. The other members of the ensemble have also left their mark in the form of animated films, songs, sound collages and drawings. One of Futur3's heartfelt projects - retold!

At the vernissage, you can browse back and forth between various perspectives on the theater work on SHIT ISLAND and the eponymous island of Nauru over white wine and pretzels!

We will also be in conversation with the Freiburg ethnologist Godwin Kornes, who specializes in colonial-era collections from Oceania and their provenance and has also researched the Brandeis Collection, whose collector appears in our play! We want to talk about his work and his view of our comic in a live broadcast.

MAKING THE STORY

READING AND PUBLIC DISCUSSION

MAKING THE STORY takes us into the next Futur3 project and into the present of a war. For over a year, Futur3 has been researching the working conditions of "fixers", the local assistants of international journalists in Ukraine. They risk their lives every day to provide the international press with stories. They organize, weigh up the risks, use their contacts and translate - and stay behind when the press convoy moves on to the next crisis area.

In a first public reading of the extensive interview material (created on a research trip in spring 2024), we will give an insight into our working methods and then switch live to one of our interviewees in Ukraine in the subsequent audience discussion, also to ask: What has changed in your professional field? For example, how has the war in the Middle East affected reporting on Ukraine?
