With her artistic self-explorations and self-assertions, Gabriele Stötzer has been engaged in a tireless struggle with herself as a woman, writer and visual artist since the late 1970s. Stötzer has repeatedly confronted cultural, social and political resistance. Her works are directed against the eradication of the individual personality as practiced by the GDR system of the time, as well as against common gender roles and cultural norms. The themes that Stötzer developed alone or with other performers create a subversive counter-image to the version prescribed by the state and society. Stötzer attempts to capture her own generation on the margins of society with its dreams, temptations and questions by reflecting, mirroring and provoking them from a distance, thereby questioning internal and external boundaries. The works combine moments of vulnerability, sensuality, longing and tangibility.
