ganz schön – von gestern

In the organizer's words:

Old and new masters in dialog

The Museumsquartier is a building with a long tradition. 2024 marks the 145th anniversary of the founding of the "Museum zu Osnabrück". It owes its character as an art museum to its collection of "Old Masters". In 1884, valuable permanent loans from the "Royal Prussian Museums in Berlin" laid the first solid foundations. Since 1912, the museum has stood on its own two feet with the foundation of the "Gustav Stüve Collection". With the "Dürer Collection of the Konrad Liebmann Foundation in the Lower Saxony Foundation" and the Felix Nussbaum House, the museum now has an international reputation thanks to its important art holdings.

"Old Masters" may be "from yesterday", but they still have something to say to us today. Moreover, they are also "quite beautiful" when viewed in the light of a museum. The exhibition curated by Dr. Thorsten Heese brings together early and important works of fine art from the 16th to 19th centuries in a showcase of "Old and New Masters". In addition to the complete presentation of works from the "Gustav Stüve Collection", permanent loans from the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation will also be on display.

The surprise piece in the presentation, which comprises a good 120 works, is the work of a "female master". In view of the many renowned "Old Masters", the exhibition poses the question of whether there were actually no "Old Master women". They have been documented in art history since the Renaissance at the latest. However, this is not reflected in at least one art collection - not even in Osnabrück. Furthermore, it can be considered certain that one or two "masters" were queer. Nevertheless, the social conditions of their time hardly allowed this to be shown openly. Traces of this can be found in the art itself.

In addition to special guided tours, we offer an accompanying program:

The soft opening on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at 3:30 pm with an introduction to the exhibition. Admission is free. Catering will be provided.

The finissage will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2025 on the occasion of International Women's Day. Free admission on this day. At 6 pm, Lisa Hecht, Adriana Martins Mota and Katrin Lazaruk will talk about "(In)Visibilities - How queer are the 'Old Masters'?"
