Garne, Stoffe, Waren - Vom Wert des Textilen

In the organizer's words:

In the exhibition "Yarns, Fabrics, Goods - The Value of Textiles", the Heimatmuseum Reutlingen is dedicated to the manufacturing process of textiles - from the raw material to the thread to the finished product - and its end as textile waste or in the recycling process. The past and present are examined in equal measure. Numerous examples from Reutlingen's diverse textile industry history raise awareness of the value of textiles. Current discussions about fast fashion and how we deal with discarded items of clothing raise questions about our consumer behavior. Past and present thus open up exciting insights and findings into a topic that has become the focus of society: the value of our goods.

The exhibition is a joint project of the Textile Working Group of the Baden-Württemberg Museum Association. The six museums in the working group worked together to develop the basic concept, which each museum then fills with its own objects and stories. Objects from the participating museums - Historische Museen Reutlingen, Maschenmuseum Albstadt, Stadtmuseum Mössingen, Museum im Gelben Haus Esslingen, Miedermuseum Heubach and Webereimuseum Sindelfingen - round off the overall exhibition and provide an insight into the diverse textile landscape in Baden-Württemberg in days gone by. The working group's first exhibition in 2015/16 shed light on Württemberg's textile industry history. The accompanying volume also serves as an introduction to the current exhibition.

Reutlingen had a rich textile industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the IndustryMap Reutlingen, the historical textile companies can be traced on a map.
