MESSIAH was first performed in Dublin in 1742 and initially had a difficult time asserting itself against opposition from church circles and the public.
Today, Handel's MESSIAH is regarded as the archetype of the oratorio par excellence, whose melodies can be heard everywhere - in church, in the concert hall, in the supermarket.
