T he painter Gerda Henning laid the foundations for the Bremen Association of Women Artists at the beginning of the 1980s by leading her colleague Marikke Heinz-Hoek to GEDOK Hamburg. As the GEDOK Bremen grew, Henning's painting developed in a processual manner and went through various stages and styles throughout her oeuvre: from expressionist beginnings to a surrealist phase to color field paintings - which she called "color bodies". Galerie Roche is showing a selection of all of Henning's creative periods - which had a supra-regional impact but were rarely shown in Bremen. "I want to go beyond the horizon" Gerda Henning, 1986 "Gerda Henning painted [...] realistic motifs. Landscapes with threatening cloudscapes, even nuclear reactors that loomed on the horizon like objects from another star.
