In terms of its history, the city of Leipzig has a number of nicknames, from "trade fair city", "book city" and "music city" to "city of the peaceful revolution". Just how justified the label "City of Sport and Sports Science" is can be proven from a historical perspective. Social developments and sports development are closely interwoven. Sport has become an independent cultural element that interacts with other social subsystems such as politics, the economy and education and has had a recognizable influence on social life since the second half of the 19th century. Leipzig is home to numerous milestones in the development of a diverse culture of exercise, including the development of scientific teaching and research in the field of gymnastics and sport. Over the course of more than 150 years, a series of superlatives can also be noted: the most national gymnastics festivals, the first professorship in sports science, the "Stadium of a Hundred Thousand" built on rubble, the world's most successful sports club ...

Dr. Petra Tzschoppe uses the example of some remarkable stations, people and places to demonstrate the significance of Leipzig's sports history, which extends far beyond the region.
