Gespräch in Sizilien

In the organizer's words:

A large table becomes a stage and yet remains what it is - a table at which the audience and actors sit, eat and drink together.

In Elio Vittorini's story Conversation in Sicily, Silvestro returns to his homeland for three days after a 15-year absence and visits his mother. "Do you remember?" she asks her son, who initially remembers very little. Only in the course of the conversation does his stay become a journey into the past, to himself and a passionate appeal for freedom.

The novel Conversation in Sicily, which made Vittorini famous, was written in 1937 when fascist Italy, in alliance with the German Nazis, sent blackshirts to support Franco.
