In January 2011, the people of South Sudan voted by a majority of 99 percent to secede from the north of the country. As a result, the former largest country in Africa officially split into two states and South Sudan became the youngest country in the world. Mohamed Kordofani sets his first feature film in the turbulent years before the split: Mona, a former singer from the northern Sudanese upper class, is plagued by guilt after causing the death of a young family father from South Sudan. To make up for her guilt, she takes in the unsuspecting widow of the deceased and her son. A friendship develops between the two women from such different backgrounds, but the moral dilemma and the unrest in the country find their way into the house.
