Former teacher and writer Jack Torrance takes on the job of caretaker of a mythical mountain hotel in Colorado. During the winter months, Jack is supposed to keep an eye on the isolated building. The family man sees this as the perfect opportunity to finish his novel in peace. His wife Wendy is also looking forward to her time in the secluded hotel. Only his six-year-old son Danny has his doubts about the whole thing. It doesn't take long for the dark premonitions and bloody visions that the boy first encounters shortly after moving in to become reality: Father Jack begins to lose his mind more and more. Armed with an axe, the maniac begins to hunt down his family.
