After Stirnemann experienced formative years as a "scientific assistant" at the Landesmuseum Oldenburg from 1927 to 1929, in 1930 she became the first publicly appointed museum director during the Weimar Republic to take over the management of the Jena City Museum (and also the management of the legendary Jenaer Kunstverein), thus becoming a pioneer of a new profession.
