Haugtussa realizes early on that she is different: she sees things that others do not see, has abilities that others do not possess. Finding no place in the community, she flees into nature, searches for herself and finds her first great love, who causes her even more pain. She struggles with her otherness and loses herself between external expectations and inner visions. The Norwegian author Arne Garborg wrote poems about Haugtussa in 1885, inspiring Edvard Grieg. The latter composed his famous song cycle, giving Haugtussa a voice. The ensemble of the Nationaltheatret Oslo will perform together with mezzo-soprano Adrian Angelico and pianist Ingrid Andsnes. Music and theater interweave. Director Eline Arbo, whose productions often resemble rock concerts, captures the moods of the story powerfully and atmospherically. With the additional music by Thijs van Vuure, the result is an intense overall experience.
A production by Nationalteatret (Norwegian National Theater) in co-production with Ruhrtriennale.
