Based on autobiographical experiences, Louis Malles depicts the difficult everyday life in a Catholic boarding school during the German occupation of France in the Second World War. The 11-year-old boy Julien Quentin (Gaspard Manesse), like his classmates, eyes the reserved but highly gifted newcomer Jean Bonnet (Raphael Fejtö) with a critical eye. After Father Jean (Philippe Morier-Genoud) asks him to look after Bonnet, a friendship develops between the two boys. Eventually it turns out that Bonnet is one of several Jews that the Catholic priests at the boarding school are hiding from the Nazis under false names. But the danger of being discovered is great, as the occupying forces are suspicious.
