Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) works as a writer of personal letters, which have become a rarity in the near future. So while he earns his money by helping strangers find happiness in their private lives, Theodore himself feels alone and lonely after divorcing his wife Catherine (Rooney Mara). Impressed by an advertisement, he buys a new operating system that is equipped with artificial intelligence and accompanies him on all his devices from now on. After Theodore has answered a few personal questions, the program is given a voice and a name: The charming Samantha (voice: Scarlett Johansson) not only organizes Theodore's emails and picks the best song for every mood, but also turns out to be the perfect conversation partner with whom Theodore can talk about God and the world. Thanks to Samantha's humorous and empathetic manner, the depressed man slowly begins to feel joy again - and to fall in love with the program...
