A mass murderer is wreaking havoc in the north-east of the USA. The killer kidnaps voluptuous women, keeps them alive for a few days, then shoots them and skins them. The law enforcement officers are completely in the dark. Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), who is still in training, is sent to the imprisoned cannibal Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) on a pretext by Dr. Crawford (Scott Glenn), the head of the FBI's behavioral research department. Crawford secretly hopes that she can persuade the formerly respected psychiatrist to help them identify and find the killer.
