In the organizer's words:

A lively folk festival in Vienna, horses neighing and market criers - the suite "Der arme Spielmann" by Helena Winkelman, based on the novella of the same name by Franz Grillparzer, takes us back to 19th century Vienna and tells the tragic life story of a street fiddler who despairs of the loudness and crudeness of the world and seeks refuge in his music. The suite was composed especially for the franz ensemble and tailor-made for the musicians. Borrowings from old Viennese songs and dances are mixed with atmospheric contemporary sounds and bring the scenes to life.

In the second part, the franz ensemble devotes itself to Beethoven's Septet. With sophisticated details and lively energy, the musicians invite you to rediscover this famous work together.

The concert program helena & ludwig is a project developed and performed by the franz ensemble as part of the residency at the Center for Art during the 2024/25 season.
