Renan Martins' solo "Hélio" is a homage to his grandfather Hélio Martins de Souza, a Brazilian ballroom dancer. In his autobiographical piece, Martins moves through a personal archive of folk and social dances while entering into a dialog with his own experiences as a professional dancer in Europe. With great ease and wit, Renan Martins combines a deeply personal narrative with themes of authenticity, originality and appropriation, accompanied by Steve Reich's monumental piece of music "Drumming", composed more than 50 years ago.
With Hélio, the Brazilian choreographer Renan Martins presents himself in Bremen for the first time - shortly before the premiere of his new production "Diamonds" with Unusual Symptoms, the dance company of Theater Bremen.

On the Easter weekend, Unusual Symptoms present their festival Vier Tage Tanz. In addition to two works by in-house choreographer Samir Akika - Fools At Work and (Little) Mr. Sunshine - the focus this year is on international guest performances. With Hélio, the Brazilian dancer and choreographer Renan Martins presents himself for the first time in Bremen two weeks before the premiere of his new creation with Unusual Symptoms. With game changer, a highlight of Hungary's progressive dance scene will have its German premiere. In addition, physical prologues, audience discussions and workshops offer the opportunity for intensive encounters with the diversity of contemporary dance.
