HIS'N'HERS (UK/D)

HIS & HERS pits Mr. and Mrs. O'Higgins against each other, just like in the movie "Mr. and Mrs. Smith". In reality, this is a new edition of the swinging "tough tenors" band in the good-humored tradition of Johnny Griffin and Eddie Lockjaw Davis, who recorded nine albums together with their band between 1960 and 1962. But Griffin and Davis were not competing, as combative as it may seem. It was collaboration, mutual inspiration and something special, because the two protagonists were both similar and different. The His'n'Hers debut album was released in 2020, a few days before the first lockdown. In October 2022, Judith and Dave O'Higgins released a digital EP - consisting of three "bonus" tracks - on which the two His'n'Hers tenor saxophonists once again compete against each other. In a way, this EP is an epilogue, hence the apt name "Omicron". The recordings were made with a "new meets old" aesthetic: inspired by the Rudy Van Gelder recordings of the 50s and 60s in terms of transparency and natural fidelity, but also with a reference to modern sonic developments. Dave and Judith O'Higgins have been making authentic jazz recordings with ribbon microphones, without spatial separation, for over 10 years and their JVG studio is getting better and better.
