None other than the famous poet E. T. A. Hoffmann is the protagonist in this fantastic work by Offenbach. Hoffmann loves Stella. At the same time, he constantly fears that she will leave him, as all the women before her have done. In Luther's wine bar, he numbs his lovesickness and reviews his past love stories in a drunken stupor. One figure always remains faithfully at his side: the muse. Reality and imagination become increasingly blurred, the boundaries to nightmare become fluid and Hoffmann's dark visions come to life. Musically, this opera offers a broad spectrum of compositional diversity.
