In this "ifs Encounter", we introduce the internationally renowned director and cinematographer Uta Briesewitz - with an episode of the current series "Fellow Travelers" that she directed .

Born in Leverkusen, she began her film career as a camerawoman before studying film at the DFFB, before deciding to continue her studies in the USA, where she stayed and eventually made a career for herself. Uta Briesewitz celebrated her breakthrough with her camera work for the legendary series "The Wire". In 2011, she switched to directing and has since directed numerous series, including "Stranger Things", "Westworld", "The Deuce", "The Wheel of Time" and "Black Mirror".

Uta Briesewitz is also a guest lecturer in the European Showrunner Program at the ifs.

"Fellow Travelers" tells the story of the risky, explosive and heated relationship between the charismatic and ambitious Hawk and the pious and idealistic Tim. The two government employees fall in love in the early 1950s in Washington D.C. in the midst of the 'Lavender Scare', the agitation against homosexuals under Senator McCarthy.

The award-winning miniseries follows the secret love of two men, whose paths separate and cross again and again, right through to the 1980s.

"These decades form the stage, the backdrop for one of the most beautiful love stories that serial television has told in recent years," judges Matthias Kalle in Zeit am Wochende. "The series is a romantic drama, political thriller, social analysis and a great story about who you are and who you are allowed to be. It's all excellently written, sensationally acted and staged with almost epic ambition."

Following the screening, Uta Briesewitz will talk about her work and her career, moderated by director and ifs graduate Sabine Bernardi (including "Ku'damm 63", "Die Mutigen 56 - Deutschlands längster Streik", "Der Club der roten Bänder").
