In anderen Räumen. Environments von Künstlerinnen 1956 – 1976

In the organizer's words:

The group exhibition "In Other Spaces. Environments by Women Artists 1956-1976" highlights the fundamental contributions of women to the history of environments. The works of eleven women artists from three generations in Asia, Europe, and North and South America are presented: Judy Chicago, Lygia Clark, Laura Grisi, Aleksandra Kasuba, Lea Lublin, Marta Minujín, Tania Mouraud, Maria Nordman, Nanda Vigo, Faith Wilding, and Tsuruko Yamazaki.

The term "environment" dates back to 1949 and was first used by Italian-Argentine artist Lucio Fontana to describe his experimental new artworks, characterized by a progressive and unconventional character. Environments are located on the threshold between art, architecture and design; they create and transform space. Their immersive and playful nature invites the audience to enter, engage and interact with them. Although Environments have quickly become an important part of the international art world, their historiography has focused almost exclusively on the United States and, to some extent, Europe, as well as on the works of artists.

Since most Environments were deconstructed immediately after their presentation, they are being reconstructed for the exhibition at Haus der Kunst with the help of a network of researchers and restorers and on the basis of archival material and various sources such as photographs, architectural plans, articles, and reviews. This makes "In Other Rooms" the first exhibition of its kind ever realized. The exhibition period begins in 1956 with Tsuruko Yamazaki's 赤(蚊帳状立体作品) (Red (Shape of Mosquito Net)) and ends in 1976, the date of the first historical survey of immersive artworks in curator Germano Celant's "Ambiente/Arte" exhibition at the XXXVII Venice Biennale. "In Other Spaces" is the result of a three-year research process and aims to show a different, delocalized historiography through the presentation of women artists. In doing so, it aims to bridge the gap between then and now.

"In Other Spaces" seeks to re-examine histories and narratives, highlighting those missing from historical accounts. The exhibition turns the artistic canon on its head by highlighting the fundamental role of women in the development of environments that have had a lasting impact on the visual arts.
