Folk singers were the most popular entertainers in Munich from the middle of the 19th century until the Second World War. In 1905, 800 full-time folk singers were registered: Papa Geis, Anderl Welsch, August Junker, Alois Hönle and Weiß Ferdl were the most famous of them.
The people of Munich flocked to the folk singers' stages to listen to their songs and "humorous presentations". Every small corner pub had to have folk singers perform at the weekend, otherwise the guests would not have come "Heut gehn ma zu de Komiker" was the motto.

Songs such as Der Stolz von der Au or Ein Wagen von der Linie 8 and the suburban characters Kare and Lucki were an integral part of folk culture.

The two Munich natives Norbert Heckner and Helmut Knesewitsch want to bring thistime back to life in their program Isarmärchen. They sing and play all the famous pieces, but also charming songs and couplets that have been forgotten over the years. There are also stories from and about Munich.
